Purpose of the Position

The Medication Aide is responsible for the safe administration of medications, treatments and resident care duties in accordance with established policies and procedures, state and federal regulations and as directed by the Director of Health Services, to assure that the highest degree of quality resident care is maintained.

Essential Job Functions

  • Administer medications and treatments as assigned within the scope of practice, following the five “R”s: right resident, right time, right medication, right dose, and right route. 
  • Take and record vital signs as ordered or otherwise necessary. 
  • Monitor self-medication program of residents when ordered by the physician, or assigned by the nurse. 
  • Follow infection control and safety procedures to protect residents and employees from exposure risk. 
  • Notify a supervisor, at once, of any noted adverse reaction of medication or awareness of medication error. 
  • Pass medications, staying with each resident until the medication is consumed. 
  • Maintain upkeep and cleanliness of med carts and medication room.  
  • Responsible for recording and/or restocking of medications from pharmacy after receiving proper instructions. Responsible for counting, locking, and storing narcotics.
  • Responsible for ordering new, routine, and cycle fill medications as ordered by physician. 
  • Gathers and records I & O’s
  • Carry out other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
  • Fill out Incident Report for resident and or staff when an incident occurs on shift and contact supervisor on duty. 
  • Become familiar and adhere to each resident’s individual service plan and assist in all care as needed. 
  • Assist with resident activities, encourage, remind, and assist residents to participate in
    activities. 
  • Assist with cleaning (or disinfecting) resident assistive appliances and/or equipment, as needed. 
  • Practice proper body mechanics when lifting and follow safety guidelines according to community policies and procedures.
  • Dispose of any biohazard waste according to OSHA regulations and company policies.
  • Carry out all resident care duties following Universal Precautions with appropriate application and removal of personal protective equipment.
  • Answer and respond immediately to resident calls for assistance.
  • Assist nurse with resident transfer or transportation arrangements.
  • Take and receive report from out/in going nurse or Medication Tech.
  • Maintain accurate, complete and confidential resident medication, treatment, and care records, according to company policies and procedures.
  • Notify the supervisor on duty immediately when a resident becomes severely ill, injured, or presents with a change of condition.
  • Notify supervisor of any concerns or questions presented by the residents’ family members.
  • Report immediately to supervisor any employee incident/injury.
  • Communicate as needed with physicians, families, and other appropriate parties, concerning resident status, changes in status, need for appointment, etc.
  • Report immediately any safety concern.
  • Is subject to frequent interruptions.
  • Work in both well lit and dark areas, as necessary to residents’ needs, during working hours.
  • Required to work with residents, family members, staff, visitors, Corporate Staff, Regulatory Agencies, etc., under all conditions and circumstances.
  • Is willing to adapt to position and/or shift changes either temporarily or permanently to assure the best resident care possible.
  • May be required to handle infectious waste, body fluids, and conditions with the use of personal protective equipment / body substance isolation device(s).
  • Must possess, as a minimum, a CNA, CPR/ first aide certification.
  • No experience needed, on-the-job training provided.
  • Attends and participates in educational programs to maintain the best and most current techniques available to this department.
  • Must be able to read, write, speak, and understand the English language.
  • Must possess the ability to make independent decisions when circumstances warrant such action.
  • Must possess the ability to deal tactfully with personnel, residents, family members, visitors, government agencies/personnel and the general public.

  • Lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling (strength): Routinely engages in medium to heavy work, lifting up to approximately 50 lbs. alone, with frequent lifting and/or carrying up to 25 lbs. 
  • Routinely lifts/supports approximately 100 lbs. or more with assistance in usual circumstances or alone in emergency situations.
  • Routinely pushes/pulls medication cart, occupied wheelchairs/geri-chairs/beds in excess of 100lbs.
  • Climbing and/or balancing: Routinely maintains physical equilibrium to safely lift/support/assist residents, transport materials and equipment, and safely move throughout the Community.
  • Spends much of time walking and standing. In emergency situations, may be called upon to climb and/or exercise greater than usual balance in order to assist individuals in distress.
  • Stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling: Frequently engages in these activities as part of providing routine care and meeting comfort and safety needs of the residents, such as tying shoelaces, adjusting footrests, retrieving dropped items from the floor, etc.
  • Reaching, handling, fingering, and/or feeling: Routinely uses tactile sense and manual dexterity to administer medications, gather information about the resident’s condition, and safely, comfortably and accurately perform resident cares.
  • Repetitive movements: None.

Recognition/vision and mental processing

  • Routinely read physician orders, medication labels, medication administration sheets, and other printed material related to administration of medications. 
  • Routinely observes signs and symptoms of resident condition, resident actions / gestures / facial expressions, resident name bands and room numbers, labels on resident clothing, resident food consumption, printed information and instructions regarding resident care or procedures, posted notices.
  • Routinely completes written documentation such as medication administration sheets, incident reports, and other flow sheets and forms.
  • Routinely performs infection control procedures, personal cares, medication administration and other techniques requiring strict adherence to procedure.
  • Hearing: Routinely recognizes auditory call signals, emergency alarms, elopement monitoring device system signals, soft voices of the elderly, and verbal communication within the workplace.
  • Smell: Routinely observes odors relevant to resident medical and personal care conditions, and those undesirable to the environment.

 

Verbal communication:
Routinely interacts with individuals highly dependent on vocal communication, i.e. residents, family members, and staff, in circumstances requiring audible and intelligible vocalizations.

 

Emotional Behavior Requirements

  • Routinely interacts with individuals (residents, family members, staff) who may be discourteous, tactless, demanding, verbally and/or physically threatening or abusive, angry or hostile, emotionally vulnerable or mentally ill, vulgar ,mean-natured.
  • Routinely called upon to control own emotions and behavior so as to protect residents’ rights and to respond professionally with respect and dignity.
  • Individual must be able to use protective equipment and take proper precautions and emergency measures.
  • This position may require working with and handling infectious diseases, infectious waste, etc.
  • This position will require handling chemicals used for cleaning/sanitizing/disinfecting.
  • The use of personal protective equipment will be required.

SUBSTANCE ABUSE POLICY/ DRUG FREE WORKPLACE APPLICANT ACKNOWLEDGMENT, RELEASE AND CONSENT LONG TERM CARE and ASSISTED/ RESIDENTIAL CARE LIVING FACILITY OPERATIONS

I agree that as a condition of accepting employment at the facility, I will be subject to the Facility’s policy regarding substance abuse. Specifically, as a condition for consideration of my application for employment, I agree to undergo testing for prohibited drugs and/or alcohol. I further understand and agree as a condition of my employment, I will be required to submit to testing for drugs and/or alcohol under the following circumstances:

I am discovered using, possessing or distributing prohibited drugs or alcohol in violation of the Facility’s Substance Abuse Testing or Drug-Free Workplace Policy;

I appear to be under the influence of drugs or alcohol, appear unable to perform my regular duties in a safe and proficient manner or other circumstances exist which create reasonable suspicion that I may have a substance abuse problem, such as an unexplained change in my temperament, speech, physical or mental condition, energy level, or appearance;

There are recurring or serious problems with my job performance, attendance or behavior where no other verifiable basis for such problem exists;

I am involved in an on-the-job accident that results in injury to me or any other individual which requires medical treatment, or which results in damage to Facility property or the property of another;

I understand that the purpose of the drug/alcohol testing is to determine or rule out the presence of prohibited substances in my body for performance and safety reasons. I understand as a condition of employment, if I refuse to comply with the Facility Substance Abuse Policy, I will face disciplinary action, up to and including discharge.

Prohibited drugs are defined to include:
Controlled substances including, but not limited to, amphetamines, barbiturates, benzodiazepines, cannabinoids (marijuana), cocaine, phencyclidine (PCP), opiates, methaqualone;
Prescription drugs which have not been specifically prescribed by a licensed physician, prescribed for the employee, or are not being used for or in the manner prescribed; or
Over-the-counter medications that are not being used for or in the manner recommended.

I understand that should the results of the initial drug/alcohol screening be positive, I may request that confirmatory testing be done by the Facility’s designated laboratory at my expense. If the confirmatory test is negative, the Facility will reimburse me for the cost of the confirmatory test.

I understand that pursuant to Facility policy, the Facility may search my property and me if reasonable suspicion exists to believe that I have violated the Drug-Free Workplace or Substance Abuse Testing Policies. As a condition of employment, I consent to all such searches.

I consent to and authorize the facility and any physician, laboratory, hospital or medical professional retained by the facility to both conduct such testing and to provide the results to the facility. I release the facility, their employees, agents, contractors and successors and assigns from any liability whatsoever arising from the request to undergo drug/alcohol testing, the testing procedures and any decisions made concerning continued employment based upon the results of the tests ducted.

I acknowledge that I have received a copy of the Facility’s Drug-Free Workplace Policy with a schedule of any prohibited drugs. I also acknowledge that I have been informed of the Facility’s drug-free awareness program as required by the Drug-Free Workplace Act of 1988. I have been informed of (1) the dangers of drug abuse in the workplace; (2) the Facility’s policy of maintaining a drug-free workplace; (3) any available drug counseling, rehabilitation and employee assistance programs; and (4) the penalties that may be imposed upon employees for drug abuse violations.

I have also been informed that I must, as a condition of employment, abide by the terms of the Facility’s Drug-Free Workplace Policy, and that I must report any criminal drug statute conviction committed in the workplace to my supervisor within five (5) days of such conviction.
